The bill, recently endorsed by the Los Angeles City Council, will empower communities to take a local approach to fight human trafficking by making clear that current law does not prevent a local governing body from acting to prevent slavery or human trafficking.



Senator Stern Secures Approval for State to Examine, Make Recommendations on Mental Health Care Delivery and Conservatorships for Gravely Disabled

SACRAMENTO – The Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) yesterday approved a request submitted by a coalition of legislators to examine county practices and make recommendations for treating the gravely disabled. Submitted by Senators Henry Stern, John Moorlach and Scott Wiener and Assemblymembers Phillip Chen, Laura Friedman and Miguel Santiago, the audit will provide critical insight into the application of the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act by Los Angeles County and two other counties selected by the State Auditor.

“This long awaited root cause analysis is alarming.  SoCalGas and the agencies tasked with overseeing them failed to anticipate foreseeable risks to the people of the San Fernando Valley and ratepayers throughout the southland, in the decades leading up to the Aliso Canyon blowout,” said Senator Henry Stern (SD-27). “We will be following up with a legislative oversight hearing to delve deeper into this report, but at present, it seems obvious that the CPUC should not force ratepayers to foot the bill for this avoidable disaster, and that the injuries to our community, its residents and our first responders can be attributed to the Gas Company’s careless maintenance of this massive fossil fuel facility in our backyards.”
